The Revolution will be Tweeted

For the second time in my life I have witnessed a true revolution. The masses took the the streets of Egypt and would not be ignored. Some of the images straight from the streets are just amazing.

I have many memories of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the former Eastern Bloc but what most don't realize is that process took months to years. The Egyptian people overthrew a thirty year dictatorship in a matter of DAYS. If that is not a stunning testament to the power of modern communication technology and social media then I don't know what could possibly be.

I just hope that this atmosphere of unity that the Egyptian people have displayed can be maintained and that they can actually form a viable Democracy in the Middle East. If the most populous Arab nation can do that they may actually be able to pull that region out of it's terrible history for brutal dictatorships and harsh religious regimes.

Cold Warriors

This story about the Navy's latest unmanned drone aircraft is pretty cool and I nearly posted about it last week but meh. Just another step towards a Skynet style enslavement of mankind.

However today I ran across the video below which paired with the story above is amazing and shows just how far our military has advanced in the last 25 years.

link may be NSFW:

What you just watched is an example of a by-gone era of military readiness. The launching of SAC bombers and tankers as quickly as possible in the event that a Russian ICBM was heading towards their base. I was lucky enough as a kid to see the B-52 bomber take off and land several times and it was quite an experience. By the way, in SAC speak BUFF stands for Big Ugly Fat Fucker (Fellow if ladies are in attendance). Sad to think that most of these amazing aircraft and the entire SAC facility in this video are a distant memory now long gone.

If you want to see a dramatized version of what our "stand off" bomber practices were at the end of the Cold War then I highly recommend the 1990 movie By Dawn's Early Light. It scared the hell out of me as a kid, I only lived 20 miles from a SAC base....
